Marc Jacobs Perfect Absolute – From production docs to trial runs

Dear customers, dear partners,

Fall has made its first appearance in the city – and so has the next chapter of Perfect by Marc Jacobs, with a worldwide launch of their new fragrance, Perfect Absolute. This latest opus stems from MR’s long-standing partnership with both the brand and Lauren Maurey, Senior product manager at Coty Inc in the US.

“Mark Jacobs takes a highly creative approach to the world of fragrance. Their irreverent universe is full of contrasts and opposites, finding boundless expression between the ultra-luxurious and the ultra-grungy,” explained Lauren Maurey. “The Perfect range models a new concept of perfection and beauty by celebrating the power of self-affirmation, self-love, and positive confidence – the ‘perfectly imperfect’ Marc Jacobs motto.”
Perfect Absolute is the fragrance’s most concentrated, long-lasting form yet: between caramelized fig, jasmine absolute and amber, the brand delivers pure indulgence. It plays with ultra high-end design choices – the bottle’s intense burgundy, semi-opaque glass, gilded logo, metallic charms and glitter put the spotlight on opulence. The same applies to the packaging, of course.

New York-based Jacky Blue has been the artist behind the Perfect range’s design since the very beginning. Every new edition sees her reinvent the aesthetics of the bottle, adapting its colorways and unique combination of finishes and symbols. The case gets re-illustrated too: the hand, words and charms get re-drawn from scratch while she fine-tunes the shade, effect, feel…
Next, it’s Lauren Maurey’s turn to steer this burst of creativity, giving it shape and spurring the best creative decisions: “We need to test things out, see them, discuss them together. The design is based on the mock-up. The fact that MR can do the pre-artwork, artwork and mock-ups is a huge boon. There are no nasty surprises – it’s all in hand, from A to Z. We put together an option and request 6 copies of it. It’s straightforward and responsive. MR is really easy to work with.”

Thanks to MR Artworks, we were able to digitize all of Jacky Blue’s sketches, clean them up, pick out each element, vectorize them, and create endless combinations however we wanted.”
Then came the act of bringing every version of the design to life, which is where MR Mock-up Lab steps up to the plate. Color intensity, harmony with the glass lacquer, glitter, selective varnish, colors, different shades and glosses of gilding – a sumptuous array of effects and trial runs!
MR Mock-up Lab produces hundreds of samples which then get submitted to Jacky Blue, who selects her favorites and zeros in on the right balance of ‘perfectly imperfect’ before the design is presented to Marc Jacobs himself.

“It’s a pleasure to work with MR because we know that everything they come up with will be feasible for our production suppliers, whose machines run to the same standards. Despite the sheer number of trial runs, we have faith in each of them. We can focus on pure creation and its application, sensory appeal, and aesthetics.”

A big THANK YOU to Lauren Maurey for her renewed faith in us. We look forward to working with her on her next wonderfully complex projects right at MR USA in Long Island, NY. A guarantee of even better agility!
